Center of Regenerative Medicine in Barcelona

The Center of Regenerative Medicine in Barcelona (CMR[B]) was founded in 2004 by virtue of an agreement between the Health Department of the Catalonian Government and the Institute of Health Carlos III (ISCIII) of the Spanish Ministry of Health. The Stem Cell Bank of Barcelona is a functional unit of the CMR[B] and one of the four nodes of the National Stem Cell Bank. The fundamental mission of CMR[B] is to advance the implementation of regenerative medicine strategies by conducting research of excellence on the generation of pluripotent stem cells and on the mechanisms that control their differentiation toward clinically relevant cell types.

Key staff involved in EBiSC

Anna Veiga, PhD (Director of the Stem cell Bank (Barcelona)) – PhD in Biology by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB, 1991). Scientific Director of the Reproductive Medicine Service at the Institut Universitari Quiron-Dexeus in Barcelona (2005-). Director of Barcelona Stem Cell Bank at the CMR[B], PRBB (2005-). Associate Professor at the Department of Ciències Experimentals i de la Vida, Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF, 2002-)
Areas of interest: Fertility & Assisted Reproduction, Genetics & Reproduction. Embryonic & Pluripotent stem cell research. Derivation, Culture and Characterization of Pluripotent stem cells (hPSC, hESC and hiPS). hPSC derivation in GMP conditions. Differentiation of hPSC. Cell therapy. Legislation and bioethics in hPSC research

Mercè Martí, PhD (Coordinator of CMR[B] Core Facility) – Dra. Martí obtained her PhD in mouse embryo manipulation at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB 1994). After that, she became a member of the imaging service at the UAB and in 2002 she was pointed as research director of the imaging service in the same University.
Since 2006 Mercè joined the CMRB technical staff and nowadays coordinate the CMR[B] Core Facility. She provides her expertise on pluripotent stem cell characterization as well as on scientific project coordination.

Bernd Kuebler, PhD (Responsible of CMR[B] Cell Culture and iPS Platform) – Dr. Bernd Kuebler did his PhD in the laboratory of Prof. K. Von Figura at the Department of Biochemistry II, University of Göttingen, Germany. In February 2011, Dr. Kuebler started at the CMRB as a reprogramming and iPS specialist, generating and characterizing human iPS lines. Since 2013 he is the person in charge of the Cell Culture and iPS Platform of the CMR[B].

Anna Seriola (Research Assistant) – Anna holds a Bachelor’s in Biology by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB, 2006). She is currently finishing grad studies in a joined PhD program by UAB and Vrije Universiteit Brussel using Stem cells as a model for the study of human diseases.
She is a research assistant in the Barcelona Stem Cell Bank at the CMR[B]. She will provide expertise and technical support for work with pluripotent stem cells.
